Marginalizing Scripture and treating the gospel like grandma’s china is part of your problem, “Christian”.
READ Deuteronomy 32:46-47
You cannot pick and choose what you believe from scripture. You either take it all or leave it all. If you decide to pick parts that you like and leave other parts out you don’t like (or are not comfortable with) you are NOT a follower of Jesus. Let’s say that again, you are NOT a follower of Jesus if you criticize the scripture.
ANY portion of God’s Holy Word ignored or rejected will have dire consequences.
AThe phrase “word of God” is quite special. It has direct Old Testament connections; particularly to Isaiah 55:11 where God says that His word goes out from His mouth and always accomplishes it intended purposes. Isaiah 49:2 also refers to God’s Servant (the Christ) whose mouth is like a sharp sword. Over and over in the Old Testament we are given instruction and information through “the word of the Lord”. When we consider that the writer of Hebrews did not have our current New Testament as his disposal, we must recognize that he is alluding to the Old Testament view of God’s word. In the Old Testament, God spoke directly to His people through their leaders, the prophets and in audible voice. His word carried absolute authority. It was intended to bring His children into conformity with His purposes. Time after time, God’s word brought warnings to those who disobeyed.
I read a recently written article by a well known Pastor that argued for abandoning the Old Testament (basically). I was appalled. We are standing on a sink hole if this is the doctrinal direction. We cannot negate the Old Testament (the Law and Prophets). It is the foundation for the New Testament. The New Testament stands on the Old Testament. “New Testament Christians” should not toss out the significance of Torah, Commandments, Dietary and Moral rules. Our God is a God of LAW and ORDER. He has not thrown out the Old Testament.
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
The bible is the very voice of God, it is ALIVE! It is purposeful then, now and into the future. His very words that shaped the earth still are WORKING as we live and breathe now. This is not a book of stories but truths. It’s not a history book but a book of keys. It’s not a rule book but a legal document.
